Liquid-cooled starters
How do liquid starters work?
To start a three-phase asynchronous motor from standstill, the torque generated by the current must be higher than the moment of inertia of the application. The required starting torque always depends on the application. It is influenced by factors such as mass, inertia and friction values, and materials within the application.
Without a starting resistor, the starting current responsible for the movement would reach more than 7x the normal rated current. High starting currents lead to serious repercussions on the supply network.
In addition, the starting resistance enables a soft start, which protects both electrical and mechanical components. Liquid starters limit the starting current and are preferably used where a very high starting torque is required. The robust design guarantees high operational reliability and long service life in the most difficult environments.
In the liquid starter, a soda solution of Na2CO3 is used as the resistance medium. The resistance value depends on the soda concentration. By changing the distance between a pair of electrodes per phase, the resistance can be varied continuously. In addition, the solution acts as a heat sink for the accruing start-up energy. The heat is then released to the atmosphere via the tank surface.
For higher tempering frequencies, heat exchangers can also be used as an option.
GINO AG has taken over the French manufacturer for liquid starters "AKA Automatismes" in 2020. We now offer the established AKEP (standard series) and MAK (special for mining) starters through our newly founded subsidiary GINO-AKA.
In addition to the standard performances on liquid starters, GINO AG also offers customized special solutions - feel free to contact us directly.
The liquid starters of the AKEP and MAK series comply:
They conform to the Low Voltage Directive 2006/95/EC of the European Parliament Council and are therefore suitable for installation in the
IP 55 according to DIN 60529
0°C to +40°C, other temperatures upon request
Up to 1000 m above sea level, higher installation altitude upon request
For the first filling, the electrolyte (Na2CO3) is supplied by GINO. The transport of the starters is only allowed without electrolyte filling.
